Autograph Letter Signed by Union soldier, 4p. octavo, Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 26, 1862, and reads in part: "...We have had a long march it took us 6 days to come here it was so muddy that our wagon train could not keep up with us but we did not get here in time. We got out of provisions. I went two days & did not have nothing to eat but some boiled wheat and marched ten miles a day. We [would] not of had that but we found one hundred bushel that the enemy let so I filled my pockets with it and boiled it in my cup. This Battle that was fought here is called Burnsides slaughter, all that he done was to march his men up and let the enemy shoot them down. They is not much prospect of getting home right away. We are on this side of the river & the Rebel Army is on the other side. We talk with them when we are on picket. We trade coffee with them for tobacco. They are as sick of fighting as we are. They say if we will kill Old Lincoln they will kill Davis...." VG.
