Mass Minute Men Medal

Excellent "Massachusetts Minute Men 1861" bronze medal, 370mm diameter, inscribed at rim "FRANCIS L. SMITH, PRVT., D, 3d, BTN, RFN." Given to those who answered President Lincoln's Call to Arms. Presented posthumously to the Smith family. Francis Smith enlisted with the 3rd Battalion, April 19 , 1861 and served until August 3, 1861, and then re-enlisted with Co. I, 19th Mass Volunteers in August 1861 and was mortally wounded in action at Nelson's Farm, Glendale, Virginia, June 30, 1862. This medal is one of 3006 that were struck. Fine.
