Vermont Civil War Correspondence with Good Lincoln

Sign In to see what this sold for

Group of six (6) letters and three covers, penned to N.A. Saxton of Vermont from his sister in Warrensville, Ohio, 1861-62, with content in part: "..[2/15/61]at 4 in the afternoon the arrival of Mr. Lincoln the President Elect was announced at Newburgh by all the noise they would raise out of gongs, bells and whistles. Staid 10 minutes then passed on to Enclid Street Station in Cleveland from which he was escorted to the Weddel House by all Military, Fire Companies, a Miniature Ship in full rig, bands of music. He rode in an open carriage, drawn by 4 white horses, the Mayor & city council and a log line of carriages in the rear. Saturday 16th clear cold & windy. Mr. & Mrs. Edwards went to the city to see the President but they were disappointed, for he left for Buffalo at 9 in the morning...[5/19/61] I rode to Camp Taylor to see the troops, to me it was a solemn sight to see so many thousand under drill preparing to face the cannons mouth, there were as many spectators as troops...[undated]this horrible war has destroyed our country. I fear for the present. Mary has been to the city today they are now enrolling all men subject for drafting, all the stores in fact all places of business are closed at 4 oclock that all may be enrolled. What a change for Cleveland. They tell me from that hour to 5 is the time the ladies generally go a shopping, will it not seem strange to be in a city like Cleveland & see all business suspended, no ladies promenading the streets. This will make the war of our country seem real. It has seemed that people in the Union states have never realized what our country were suffering. Ohio has sent a great many men more than half that went from Newburgh are numbered with the dead. Company B, of the 7th Reg. from Ohio came out of the Battle at Culpepper Court House with only 14 men, the lad that was with Aunt when you was here has passed through all the Battles unscathed...it would seem all able bodied men must be in the War as they are to commence drafting Sept. 4..." More. All Fine.
