Nice content 1860 Lincoln campaign letter. September 9, 1860, Newton Jasper County, Iowa, 4 pgs., fine. Reads in part: "We are posted on politics and we know that Lincoln is the man. He can split rails and he can split the Democratic party too, as we have already seen. But Douglas is so stumpy he can never make good rails of him so he will probably make staves to make whiskey barrels. It is said that he holds his whiskey exceedingly well". Wonderful campaign rhetoric!
