Scarce invitation to meet the Honorable Stephen A. Douglass at the home of Charles W. Baker, in New York City, on December 30, 1857. At this time Douglas had just distanced himself from the policies of President James Buchanan, and was getting ready to defend his senate seat against Abraham Lincoln in the campaign of 1858, where defeated Lincoln after a series of famed debates. The invitation measures 4 ¼" X 7 1/8", folded. Was Douglas looking to raise money for his upcoming campaign? Light soil, else fine.
