SARAH NATHANS had been living out of wedlock with Moses Nathans and had been active in synagogue affairs and bore three children by him (two boys). As she had not yet converted to Judaism the congregation would not allow one of the boys to be circumcised. Ultimately changing congregations and marrying Moses in 1794, permission was granted to convert and visit mohel. Here are 6 original printed and ink completed checks, all on the "SCHUYLKILL BANK OF PHILA." 5 with woodcut illustrations of city buildings and bridge across river, the other a varied printing style without illus. Various dates 1821-1824 all boldly made out in large writing to "Mrs. Sarah Nathans" each in amount of 150 dollars. (size 2 ½ x 6 ½ each). Each with original penned endorsement signature "SARAH NATHANS" on reverse. Normal aging; exc. Accompanied with photostats from "The History of Jews of Philadelphia" with story about the hassle
