(No. 1) From G. Fenn, New Haven, Ct. Advises his subscription to Occident expired; asks Leeser to discontinue sending and offers reason. With cover sheet addressed to Leeser. Exc. (No. 2) By "ISRAEL COHEN / BALTIMORE." "Mrs. Cohen asks me to say that your request and that of your young friend has been promptly attended to… she is delighted she had it in her power to serve you." He sends an "obituary notice" [not enclosed] asking it placed in the Occident and to continue sending the Occident. Exc. (No. 3) From Moses Shloss. Apologizes that a Mr. Traub, acting sec'y of their congregation sent report of their meeting but "…he is not an English scholar [and] therefore as the mover of the Resolutions I [have] translated them into English. If you find errors...I beg correct them for me." Reverse acts as cover with address to Leeser and postal surcharge. Clean tear on one fold and minor short tears on margin, very small piece out bottom blank area. (No. 4) Neatly lettered in Hebrew, 2 line letter addressed (in English) to "Mr. Leeser" with signature (in English) "J. MIDDLEMAN / BAYARD STREET, NEW YORK." Dated (in Hebrew) August, 1861. Asks whether the "ADAMS EXPRESS" (2 words in English) package received with the two "Bittelin" [??]. Exc.+. Judah Middleman wore many hats: "matzah-baker" in NYC; also president and a rabbi (possibly part time) of Beth Hamidrash Congregation! (with photostats of those varied roles he filled from "The Jewish Community of N.Y." by H.B. Grinstein, 1995. (Exc.) All four letters
