Neatly penned three page letter by prominent Phila. attorney (with fine signature) "OSCAR B. TELLER" (of well-known Jewish family of attorney's and businessmen) with their printed letterhead Sept. 13, 1889 to noted Jewish scholar Cyrus Adler. He writes that after research was able to find but one case (in 1817) where: "…a Jew was charged with having performed work on Sunday…[and] convicted…on appeal to Supreme Court his attorney reasoned why he should not have been arrested [describing reasons at length]…but yet the Jew was convicted on appeal, as well." Letter concludes: "possible there are other statutes and decisions relating to the Jews, but have not yet found them…" Exc.+
