COLLECTION OF 5 CIVIL WAR ERA THEATER PLAYBILLS FO

Bold typefaces to attract public attention with each proudly announcing that "MR. JULIUS EICHBERG" was the "MUSICAL DIRECTOR" (terminology varies i.e. "Orchestra Dept. Under Direction of Julius Eichberg;" …"The Popular Orchestra Under Direction of [him];" …"Play will be preceded by an original overture with all music composed by [him etc. etc.]." An 1862 playbill is unusually long 5 x 21, other four 6 x 14. Stage plays and actors differ on each. Prominent headings "BOSTON MUSEUM" (theater name) and typeface for title of each play; each also with many details of the show; list of actors and their individual roles and at bottom the title and details of stage production that follows. A notation about admission of children on most. (1) March 10, 1862 "ENCHANTRESS!" (2) Oct. 13, 1863 "THE WIFE…A TALE OF MANTUA." (3) Nov. 9, 1863 "CAMILLA'S HUSBAND"; (4) Sept. 5, 1864 "Brilliant Comedy…VANITY FAIR!;" (5) Jan. 6, 1865 "THE INCONSTANT OR WINE WORKS WONDERS." All show aging, but complete; minor faint damp stains; most have few chips or very short tears on extreme edges of blank margins. JULIUS EICHBERG (1824-1893); prominent Jewish violinist, composer, orchestra leader; notable as founder of the famous BOSTON CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC; was General Supervisor for entire Boston School System; a composer of operettas and director of an opera troop. ACCOMPANIED BY four page (5 ½ x 8 ½) "PROGRAMME OF THE NATIONAL PEACE JUBILEE CONCERT... BOSTON, JUNE 15, 1869." Eichberg's name on title page as a conductor. Concert in commemoration of "RESTORATION OF PEACE AND UNION" following Civil War;… "…Written for the occasion by Oliver Wendell Holmes" and more. Center pages lists ceremonies; back page names committees sponsoring event, Eichberg's among them. Light aging; exc.; small piece out back page only along blank margin. Also included: 1903 dated "SOUVENIR PROGRAM OF THE BOSTON MUSEUM" for its final season "prior to demolition;" lengthy "History" of famous theater. 62 pages (5 ½ x 8). Eichberg mentioned in text; boldly noted on title page theater owned by "CHARLES FROHMAN'S EMPIRE THEATER CO." (mentioned elsewhere also). Frohman a Jewish family prominent in theater industry. Fancy paper covers exc.+. (with bio sketches of Eichberg and Frohman). All 7 items
