Extremely lengthy letter from Cassel Germany July 4, 1848 from his two brothers "R. L. Mailert" and "Charles L. Mailert" and his sister "Laura [?] Mailert." Three large (8 ½ x 14) pages. First page and a half in small, neat hand, entirely in German, from brother Charles with few Hebrew words interspersed. LOWER HALF OF PAGE 2 in a neat hand IN ENGLISH addressed to "Dear Sister" from Charles Mailert who writes "Though very troublesome in this melancholy time…it is impossible to send a letter to my brother without adding some lines to you" he writes that before their mother died "she spoke with enthusiasm of you…and she hoped I would recover from my sickness in order to emigrate and to haste to you" and writes further of his mother's passing at age 72. His family is okay and doing "…tolerably well and I am alas yet the same" and signs it "Your loving brother CHARLES L. MAILERT" adding P.S. in German at bottom and at top of page 3. Lower section of page 3 with a letter entirely in German by the sister to Augustus in America. Back sheet acts as cover with full penned address to Augustus Mailert in Richmond with German and New York postal surcharges. ACCOMPANYING LETTER is a lengthy typescript that was made many years ago entirely in German intended to facilitate translation. Accompanying it are two preliminary, hurried endeavors to translate the lengthiest letter which reports the stirring times in that part of Europe i.e. "Germany too has its [first bit] of freedom…censorship of press abolished…the people can choose other ministers…political prisoners full amnesty…everyone wears the colors of freedom, they fly from every house…last night, at a serenade…the citizens of the guard attacked from ambush…trouble becoming [more intense] here in Jewish homes…" (and much more). Typical aging and light browning; all writing very clear. Right margin only chipped and nicked, affecting very few words and short 2 ½ inch tear only at a fold near bottom. On first sheet (back sheet) has full tear on that same lower fold, but all writing intact. Accompanied with many photostats of Augustus Mailert significance in the Jewish life of Richmond…
