Booklet, "Proclamation of ANDREW JACKSON, President of the United States, of the 10th December, 1832," string bound, untrimmed, 21pp, 6" x 9-1/2," Harrisburg, very good. In this Proclamation, President Jackson is responding to the South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification, (November 24, 1832), an ordinance to nullify certain tariffs of the Congress of the United States. South Carolina's nullification ordinance was the strongest test of the Federal authority in the history of the republic. At issue, does any state have the right to "veto" federal law? In the strongest terms, Jackson threatens force to enforce Federal law, ""It was known, if force was applied to oppose the execution of the (Federal tariff) laws, that it must be repelled by force ..." The crisis was resolved when Jackson sent warships to Charleston, South Carolina.
