Leu, August W., 'Approaching Storm', Oil on Canvas,

"Approaching Storm" by August Wilhelm Leu (1818-1897, German), oil on canvas. Imagery includes Two (2) figures in the foreground by a small boat on the shore of an alpine lake, the landscape is mountainous (possibly Swiss Alps with Matterhorn in the distance), and the sky is filled with clouds and a distant storm. Signed "Leu 1867" in lower left. It appears that the first initial is mostly obscured by the frame. Artwork dimensions: Approximately 40" high by 60" wide. Frame dimensions: 46" high by 65 1/2" wide.
Condition: Good to very good. General craquelure overall. Frame in good to very good condition, with brass picture light attached.
August W. Leu was a very popular artist of his day and he participated in the 1878 Paris World Fair and obtained honorable mentions in the 1855 and 1863 World Fairs. He was a professor and member of the Academy of Berlin since 1860 and was previously very active in Duesseldorf.
