Charming, colorful oil on canvas Clowns with Zebras by Jean Isy de Botton (French/American 1898-1998), dated 1945. Signed lower left "Jean de Button." Dimensions: approximately 18" by 21", with frame 21 1/2" x 25 1/2".
Condition: Very good, lightly soiled. Born in Saloniak, Greece, Jean Isy de Botton is most recognized for his colorful abstract paintings but was also an accomplished illustrator and muralist. A product of both the École des Beaux-Arts and the Sorbonne, he exhibited between 1926 and 1931 at the Salon of the Indépendents, and at the Tuilleries in 1932 and 1933. In 1937, de Botton was awarded the distinction of serving as the official painter of the coronation ceremony of George VI inside Westminster Abbey, by which time he had abandoned a realist style in favor of abstraction. De Botton established permanent residency in New York City in 1945 and became a citizen in 1977. Throughout his lifetime he exhibited widely throughout France, Europe, and the United States.
