India, Carved Wood Sculpture of Nandi, Shiva's Moun

Carved wood (possibly teak) sculpture of Nandi which means "happiness," designates the sacred bull belonging to Shiva, the Hindu god of creative power. When carved as a free-standing figure, the Nandi is always shown in a resting position that emphasizes the calmer aspect of its power. In traditional Indian sculpture Shiva is typically shown with the animal. As a symbol of Shiva, the Nandi represents power, virility, joy, and delight, as well as a controlled potential for destructiveness. Remants of white and red paint are noted. The bull wears a decorative blanket and neck ornament. Dimension: 9 1/4" high, 10 3/4" long, 4 1/2" wide
Condition: Good. One ear is broken, 1 1/2" long by 1/8" high portion missing along bottom edge, plexi stand is missing One (1) foot.
