October 1849 Letter by Berks County Judge, Advising a Friend, Reading, MA, Very Fine. In this Oct. 24, 1849 letter from Judge John Banks to Gen. I. H. Pressman[?] of Harrisburg, PA, the judge provides advice on how to proceed on a forgery case. The letter measures 9.5" x 7.5" and is written on blue paper with integral mailing leaf. It reads, in part, "Your letter was duly received, but as our courts were in session, I could not find time to give it my [attention]. I should, if I were in your place, employ McRead at once... The evidence of the fact of the forgery would appear, as prominent as possible... You should be present at the argument. That, I say to you, will be of such importace that you will acknowledge. You do understand the subject better than any other person... [signed] Jno. Banks." Hon. John Banks (1793-1864), served from March 1831 as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-second, Twenty-third, and Twenty-fourth Congresses and served until he resigned in 1836. He then became judge of the Berks Judicial District, and resigned to become State Treasurer in 1847, resumed the practice of law in Reading, up to his death in 1864.
