Majority Of People in Kansas Are Opposed to Slavery

1858, Speech Pamphlet: "THE LECOMPTON CONSTITUTION" by Senator James Harlan, Buell & Blanchard, Printers, Washington, D.C., Very Fine.
A speech delivered on January 25, 1858 to the United States Senate by James Harlan. 9" x 5.75", 14 pages. The speech was delivered to make it clear that Kansas will be a free state whether elected to be a slave state or not. "For it is now known to us all , that an overwhelming majority of the people in Kansas are opposed to slavery." Lightly toned, with separated front cover. Harlan was an Iowa state senator (1856-1865, 1867-1873) and was a very close friend and associate of President Lincoln. Full of strong arguments in support of Kansas becoming a free state.
