January 28, 1859, Senate Chamber Letter written to Smith Ely, Jr., State Senator and future Mayor of New York, Very Fine. This rather cryptic letter, written in brown ink on fine-laid paper, and containing penciled corrections, is addressed to Smith Ely, Jr., who was a State Senator at the time, and who had conferred with the author of this letter for some political favor. The letter measures 8" x 5", and is signed by "Andrew P. Hall", but the signature is scrawled at the end, and the last name is in question. The full text reads: "Honl. Smith Ely, Jr. My Dear Sir: An apology is due to you for deferring an answer to your letter so long - as you suggested I have endeavored to ascertain whether any feeling existed favorable to my proposition that might be made in regard to the subject of your communication. The feeling is decidedly and immeasurably adverse and the attempt now being made to obtain the object, by the aid of the Genl Government does not diminish the feeling entertained heretofore - Kindly & Respectfully Yours, Andrew P. Hall." Smith Ely, Jr., (8125-1911) was a Mayor of New York City, and a Representative from New York. He served in the State Senate (1858-59), was a Democratic Congressman from NY (1871-73; 1875-76), and was Mayor of New York (1877-1878). Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
