Carte de Visite of a "Shattered" Jefferson Davis CDV of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America. Carte-de-Visite, being an illustrative rendering of a portrait of Davis by Wm. M. Davis of Port Jefferson, L.I., done in 1861, and bearing the title "The Neglected Picture"; published by E. Anthony, New York City, 1862. Depicted here is Davis tattered portrait in a frame, hanging crooked on the wall, its glass shattered. Stuck into the frame are two "humorous" business cards cards, one reading "B. Happy, Undertaker" and the other, "Justice and Co., Dealers in "Cordage." A few very faint spots of discoloration at the margins, not affecting image; in Very Fine condition overall. This graphic portrayal of the Northern attitude to the Southern leadership shortly after the South's secession from the Union is pure vitriol - ignoring, perforce, that Davis did not take an active part in planning or hastening secession.
