1868 Presidential Candidate Horatio Seymour CDV c. 1870, CDV Photograph, Horatio Seymour, Democratic Presidential Candidate in 1868, Fine. This original carte-de-visit photograph shows a wide-eyed New York Democrat, Horatio Seymour. Printed in the usual 4" x 2.5" size, this card has Seymour's name printed below the photo, but has no other printing. This card has no folds or tears, but does have some water stains, mainly on the back. Still its a nice portrait of an American Political Figure with definite beliefs. Horatio Seymour (1810–1886) was an American politicial figure. He was admitted to the bar in 1832, and served three times in the New York State Assembly (1841, 1844, 1845). Elected Governor in 1852, he was criticized for vetoing a prohibition bill and was defeated for reelection. Elected Governor again in 1862, Seymour declared the Emancipation Proclamation unconstitutional, and opposed federal conscription as a violation of states' rights (but vigorously promoted voluntary enlistments). He was the Democratic Presidential candidate in 1868, and after his defeat by Ulysses S. Grant, he assumed the role of elder statesman in his party.
