1. ALPHONSO TAFT, December 5, 1876, Card Signed, "Alphonso Taft - Attorney General," 3" x 4.5," Choice Mint. This signature card is in excellent condition, having been preserved in its original envelope (included with this lot), addressed to early autograph collector Albert L. Lord, for more than a century. The envelope used for this is a Stamped Envelope Entire with the U.S. Centennial 3 cent green stamp (Scott U221). This envelope catalogs $50.00 in the 2005 Scott Specialized Catalog. This envelope is in nice condition, toned around the edges, with a light cancellation and Washington, DC postmark.

This pristine signature card has also been protected by its original envelope (included with this lot), which is addressed to autograph collector Edward P. Lord, probably Albert Lord's brother. This envelope is in nice condition with a "Centennial Philada - Pa" postmark, possibly mailed from the Centennial Exposition.
Two choice condition autographs from 1876, with an established provenance. (4 items).

Alfred Traber Goshorn (1833-1902) was Director General of the United States Centennial Exposition held in Philadelphia in 1876. Alphonso Taft (1810-1891) was a Cincinnati lawyer until Grant appointed him Secretary of War in 1876, replacing William W. Belknap, who had been impeached. He was replaced that summer by James D. Cameron, after Grant appointed Taft Attorney General. Taft served in this office into 1877 when he resigned to continue his law practice. Alphonso Taft was the father of future President William Howard Taft.
