James G. Blaine Signature With Original Envelope JAMES G. BLAINE. January 11 (1877), Card Signed, "J. G. Blaine - Me," 3" x 4.5," Choice Mint. The "Me" below Blaine's signature refers to the fact that he was then Senator from Maine. Written in blue ink, this signature card is in pristine condition because it has been protected in its original envelope for more than a century. The envelope used for this is a Stamped Envelope Entire with the U.S. Centennial 3 cent green stamp (Scott U221). This envelope catalogs $50.00 in the 2005 Scott Specialized Catalog. This envelope is in nice condition, lightly toned around the edges, with some light postal smudging received while traveling through the mail system. Albert L. Lord apparently began collecting autographs in 1876, when he and Edward P. Lord, probably his brother, sent requests for autographs to prominent Americans living at that time. Some of these prominent people were slow to return the signed card in the envelope provided by the Lords, and thus are postmarked early in 1877 (though often without a year date). A lovely signature with an established provenance, with a rare envelope to top it off. (2 items). James Gillespie Blaine (1830–1893) was an American politician. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1863–1876) and as U.S. Senator from Maine (1876–1881). He was U.S. Secretary of State (1881 & 1889–1892) and ran for President in 1884, losing the election to Grover Cleveland. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
