Rare Maria Martinez pottery jar, circa 1929, black on black glaze with Avanyu (water serpent) design at belly having a scalloped border, signed ''Marie'' on base, 12.25''h x 11.5''d (opening at rim, 7.75''d). Provenance: Given directly to the mother of the consignor who was a friend of Maria's in the 1920s. Displayed at the Oakland Museum from 1991 to 1993. Comes with family letter and past appraisals. Condition: A few minor surface nicks, no cracks or chips.
