War-date Autograph Document Signed, "Jas. Burton Ensign of 2d Virga. Reg." 15cm x7 cm, April 25, 1777, addressed to the Commissary and reads " A Provision Return for 5 men of the 5th Virginia Regiment for 2 Days." Fine.^tThe 2d Virginia Regiment was authorized by the Virginia Convention, July 17, 1775, as a force of regular troops for the Commonwealth's defense. It consisted of seven companies, 476 privates and the usual regimental officers. William Woodford, of Caroline County, was named colonel, along with Lieutenant Colonel Charles Scott and Major Alexander Spotswood were the regiment's initial field officers. They participated at the Battle of Great Bridge, The Battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth with General Washington, as well as the Battles of Guilford Court House and Cowpens. ^t
