After Jackson was promoted to a position at a tire plant previously reserved for whites, a bomb was planted in his car. It exploded minutes after he left work February 27, 1967 Natchez, Mississippi, killing him instantly. The murder remains unsolved, although it was reopened in 1997 and 2005. ^t
