Broadside, Black Panther Founder Killed in 1969

Broadside 16-1/2" x 22,' B/W, fine. "In Memory of Alprentice "Bunchy" Carter, Southern California, Deputy Minister of Defense, Black Panther Party. 1:30 PM Friday January 24, 1969... " A large photographic image of Carter presented above the "Funeral Card." Also, a small boxed notice at lower left about transport of the body of John Jerome Huggins to New Haven for funeral services there. ^tAlprentice "Bunchy" Carter (1942-1969), A LA gang member, Carter was convicted of armed robbery and was imprisoned in Soledad prison for four years. While incarcerated Carter became influenced by the Nation of Islam and the teachings of Malcolm X, and converted to Islam. After his release, Carter met Huey Newton, one of the founders of the Black Panther Party, and was convinced to join the party in 1967. Carter formed the Southern California chapter of the Black Panthers. The chapter was very successful, gaining 50-100 new members each week including Angela Davis. Carter and Huggins were killed by George and Larry "Ali" Stiner, members of the rival black nationalists group, United Slaves.
