ALLSTON, Robert Francis Withers (1801-1864) was a Governor of South Carolina. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1821. He was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1826, serving in that body through 1832. In 1834, he was elected to the South Carolina Senate, serving in that body through 1856. From 1856-1858 he served as Governor of South Carolina.^tConfederate cover bearing a CSA #11, addressed in the hand of Governor Allston of South Carolina, to his son "Col. Ben. Allston C.S.A. Genl. E.K. Smith's;...Shreveport, La." Pencil docketing by Colonel Allston reads " March 2, 64 the last he ever wrote me - with his blessing upon me & my life." Dampstain, else VG.^tBenjamin Allston b. 1833, graduated from West Point in 1853, was a rice planter and Episcopal minister at Georgetown and Union, South Carolina. Served in the U.S. Cavalry 1853-57. Lt. C.S. Artillery, 3/16/1862; Major Provisional Army Confederate States; Major 5th Va. Cavalry; Commanded 4th Alabama fall of 1861 while E.M. Law was recovering from wounds received at Manassas; Colonel May 1862; POW at Harrodsburg, Tn. while in Command 3rd Brigade, Tennessee Cavalry; exchanged. Served on staff of E. Kirby Smith and others. ^t
