JOHNSTON, Joseph Eggleston (1807-1891) Commanding General, C.S. Army of the Shenandoah, 1861; Commanding General, C.S. Army of the Potomac, 1861-62; Commanding General, C.S. Army of Northern Virginia, 1862; Commanding General, C.S. Army of Tennessee, 1863-64,1865, capitulated to Sherman on April 26, 1865. ^tAutograph Letter Signed, "J.E. Johnston" 1-1/4p. quarto, on "PRESIDENT'S OFFICE, National Express and Transportation Company" lettersheet, Richmond, Virginia, December 26, 1865, addressed to Major General J.H. Wilson, and reads "...'The position it is proposed you shall fill' is the superintendence of the operations of the Company North of the Ohio - & probably of the Potomac too. The charter of the Company, just granted by the Legislature of this state, authorizes a capital of from five to ten Million. The board of directors closes their subscription books on the 3d of November - When stock to the amount of $3,780,000 had been subscribed - principally in New York, Baltimore, St. Louis, Richmond & Lynchburg. This amount can be increased greatly, if necessary. But one assessment has been made - of five per cent. Another will probably be necessary soon. As to compensation - The directors think that in the privilege of taking 500 shares of their stock at cost, they are offering a strong inducement - as in the event of success, of which they are confident, it will be a reasonable fortune. I hope that you will give me the pleasure of meeting you - in Baltimore - or at any point that may be more convenient to you. If so, I can explain the condition & prospects of the company fully..."
