The Hampton Legion Cavalry Leave For Manassas On July 21, 1861^tWar-date Confederate soldier's letter by Sgt. Leonard Williams, Hampton Legion, South Carolina Cavalry, 3pp. 4to., ink, Ashland, Va., July 21, 1861, and reads in part:"...our company moves tomorrow for Manassas. I will have to take a wagon it will take some six days to make the march. Taylor's company reached here this morning the whole cavalry force of the legion is now here but Taylor's will remain here a week after the other three leaves. The Infantry companies of the Legion went on to Manassas day before yesterday & I suppose probably participated in the fight of yesterday, which we hear by rumor was going on at Bulls Run or near there. I hope Beauregard was as successful as in the 1st engagement, it is believed here that the enemy must have lost nearly 1500. I have not been able to get any of the details, the regiment Ephraim belongs to was engaged in the fight & I cannot hear whether he was hurt or not. It is said our regiments suffered most last night. Heavy cannonading was heard here supposed to be at Aquia Creek about 55 miles distant, The firing lasted over two hours. The big fight I expect will be over before we can reach the field, but that will be only one opportunity lost there will be plenty of work still to be done, even if our army was victorious..."
