Autograph Letter Signed, "S.T. Sawyer" 1p. octavo, Washington, April 20, 1861, addressed to Governor Pickens of South Carolina, and reads "I have been sojourning in this city for several months, and such is my position and acquaintance here that, perhaps, I can serve either yourself or the Confederate States. If so do not hesitate to command me..." Fine.^tSAWYER, Samuel Tredwell (1800-1865) attended Edenton Academy and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Edenton; member of the State house of representatives 1829-1832; served in the State senate in 1834; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1837-March 3, 1839); chairman, Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings (Twenty-fifth Congress); unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the Twenty-sixth Congress; moved to Norfolk, Va., and resumed the practice of law; editor of the Norfolk Argus for several years; appointed collector of customs at Norfolk on May 16, 1853, and served until April 6, 1858; moved to Washington, D.C.; during the Civil War was appointed, September 17, 1861, commissary with the rank of major in the Confederate service and served until August 2, 1862.^t
