HOOVER, John Edgar (1895-1972) was the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States. He founded the present form of the agency, and remained director for 48 years until his death. During his life, Hoover was highly regarded by much of the U.S. public. Since his death various allegations have tarnished this image. Hoover's leadership spanned eight presidential administrations, encompassed Prohibition, the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. During this time the United States moved from a rural nation with strong isolationist tendencies to an urbanized superpower.^tTyped Letter Signed, "J.E. Hoover" 1p. quarto, on FBI letterhead, December 11, 1941, addressed to South Carolina Representative Hampton Fulmer, and reads "I am indeed pleased to inform you that an appointment to the position of Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been tendered to Mr. L. Holmes Eleazer, Jr. of Columbia, South Carolina, in whom you have expressed an interest..." Fine.^tHampton Pitts Fulmer (1875-1944) was an American politician of the Democratic Party. He represented South Carolina in the United States House of Representatives from 1921 - October 19, 1944. After his death, his wife Willa L. Fulmer took over his seat.^t
