Paddle Steamers and Views of New Orleans. Mid-1860s. 4 large-format albumen prints. 27 x 36,5 cm and 1 17,5 x 23 cm. Mounted to album pages on back and front.
Born in 1829 in Frankfurt Oder, Theodore Lilienthal emigrated to America in 1853 and began practicing as a daguerreotypist in 1854 when circa two dozen photographers were active in New Orleans. He established a succesful portrait trade as a daguerrian entrepreneur before the Civil War and built and maintained a flourishing studio in a competitive market. Lilienthal was commissioned to take 150 large-plate photographs of New Orleans by the city to be exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1867 and for presentation to Emperor Napolean III. The images offered here are undoubtedly from this project which was presented in an album entitled La Nouvelle Orleans et ses environs. - Paper slightly buckled, print with minimal surface scuffing, minimal fading along edges in some areas, otherwise fine tonal prints in very good to near excellent condition.
