Title: The Anatomy of Melancholy, What It Is, With All the Kinds, Causes, Symptoms, Prognostics and Several Cures of it.
Author: [Burton, Robert] Description: 2 volumes. xxiv, 461; [iv], 612 pp. (8vo) 9x5½, original embossed brown cloth, spines lettered in gilt within a gilt border. First American Edition.A work of far-reaching influence, proposed as a medical treatise but expanded to treat the whole life of man, including social and political reform as well as bodily and metal health. In his argument, Burton draws upon a very wide body of literature, from the Bible and the Fathers, through Greek and Latin classics, to the Elizabethan writers; his book thus becomes a store-house of miscellaneous learning, and it has come to be regarded in that light rather than as a medical work. First published in 1621. Heading: Place Published: Philadelphia Publisher: T. Wardle Date Published: 1836 Condition reportSpines faded, spine ends chipped, front joint of Volume 2 splitting, bookplates and early ownership signature (Charles Alfred Welch); foxing, some pencil markings; very good.
