Together, 2 volumes in 1. (12mo) 6¼x3½, period calf, rebacked with modern calf. First Editions. Two important works by the groundbreaking 17th century Dutch physician. The first is described in the Heirs of Hippocrates as "the first edition of this classical and accurate account of the anatomy of the testicle. It contains also an account of the use of clysters and of experimental fistulae which far predates Claude Bernard and Beaumont. The eleven foldout plates of the anatomy of the male genitalia are interesting and original but of modest artistic attainment." The short treatise at end, De usu siphonis, introduced his contribution to anatomic improved syringe. The second work is an accurate and concrete description of the anatomy and physiology of the female mammalian reproductive organs. "Graaf demonstrated ovulation anatomically, pathologically, and experimentally. He opposed the Aristotelian doctrine of the egg being formed in the uterus as a result of activation of the menstrual blood by the male semen, but held that generation takes place from the ovum pre-existent in the ovary. He herein gives the first description of ovarian (Graafian) follicles and the corpus luteum. His was an advanced and accurate understanding of the anatomy of the female genitalia. The twenty-seven engraved plates illustrating Graaf's anatomical research add interest to this small volume" - Heirs.
