Atlas to Mohrenheim's Obstetrics 1791

Title: Abhandlung über die Entbindungskunst: verfastauf höchstem Befehl Ihro Majestaät der Kayserinn aller Reussen zum Russen Ihres Reichs
Author: Mohrenheim, Joseph Freyhern von
Description: Atlas volume only. 48 pp. text including the title. With 46 copper-engraved plates. (folio) 20½x16½, original boards. The important atlas volume to the handbook of obstetrics written by the personal physician of Catherine II of Russia. "An Austrian, Mohrenheim became body-surgeon and accoucheur to Empress Catherine II of Russia, by whose order this now rare work was published. The book opens with a brief literary history of obstetrics, followed by an extensive text. The remarkable life-size engravings, many of them after Smellie, represent female genitalia, embryos, deliveries, and instruments" - Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1161. In addition to Smellie, a number of the plates were drawn by the author and are entirely original; others are based on those of Röderer and Eisenmann, with some improvement. A skilled cataract surgeon from Vienna, Mohrenheim was called to St. Petersburg by Catherine the Great to be her surgeon and obstetrician, where he remained the rest of his life. Garrison-Morton 6161.
