Title: Tabulae Neurologicae ad Illustrandam Historiam Anatomicam, Cardiacorum Nervorum, Noni Nervorum Cerebri, Glossopharyngaei, et Pharyngaei ex Octavo Cerebri.
Author: Scarpa, Antonio Description: [3] 44 pp. 7 copperplate engravings, each accompanied by a duplicate outline plate. (Folio) 25x18½, later calf-backed boards. First Edition."Scarpa's anatomic masterpiece, the product of twenty years of research on the nerves. The seven life-size plates illustrate the human glossopharyngeal, vagus and hypoglossal nerves, which had never before been correctly shown. Scarpa was also the first to delineate correctly the nerves of the heart, and showed that the terminal ramifications of the cardiac nerves are directly connected to cardiac muscular fibers" (Norman). "This study of the nerves of the heart is Scarpa's most famous work and is illustrated with his outstanding life-size drawings. The plates were cut by Faustino Anderloni (fl. 1750) whom Scarpa had trained in order to realize his drawings as accurately and as meticulously as possible." (Heirs of Hippocrates). Garrison-Morton 1253; Heirs of Hippocrates 1105; Norman 1897.
