Schott is most widely known for his works on hydraulic and mechanical instruments, but the present work deals with natural history and phenomena, most significantly with "monsters" and remarkable birth defects, conjoined twins, and other medical abnormalities and curiosities, with an amazing array of illustrations. There are also many plates of unusual animals, notable for the many from South America, a study of demons and angels, and more.
