Title: Principes d'Embryologenie, de Zoogenie et de Teratogenie
Author: Serres, [Antoine Étienne Reynaud Augustin] Description: Two volumes comprising text volume and plate atlas. [2], xv, 942, [1] pp. 25 folding lithograph plates. (4to) 10¾x8¾, modern morocco-backed marbled boards. First Edition."Serres did research into the development of the bones and teeth in normal and abnormal fetuses and studied the comparative anatomy of a number of vertebrate organs. He noted that many organs start from a number of isolated centers, which eventually unite to form a single adult organ--an observation that he regarded as a complete confirmation of epigenesis. In his general approach to the nature of life and the harmony between the organs he was clearly influenced by Cuvier, who mentioned Serre's work with admiration. Serre's theoretical position was more closely akin to that of Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, who regarded Serres as his collaborator." (DSB) Plates illustrate incompletely separated twins, malformed organs and limbs, etc. Heading: Place Published: Paris Publisher: Firmin Didot Freres Date Published: 1859 Condition reportDampstain to edges of approximately 100 pages at rear of text volume and to most plates; still very good.
