Colonial Notes Printed by B. Franklin
Rare Red & Black 1760 "Printed by B. FRANKLIN" Issue Delaware. May 31, 1760. Thirty Shillings. "Printed By B. FRANKLIN" Issue. PASS-CO graded Very Fine-25. Fr. DE-70. This is a unusually colorful "Printed By B. FRANKLIN" note in that it is multicolor on its face side. It was printed in two passes of Franklin's press, one in red and the other in black. Each time a different color ink was used the first printed sheet would have to be lifted and hung up to dry, before it could be placed back down for the text of the second color to be added. Printing in two colors was more than double the amount of physical work and time needed to accomplish the job, for the printer. Thus, the use of two colors was rarely incorporated into the design. In this case, the entire issue only had four different, higher denominations, all being of particularly high value and thus warranted this special two color design. The note itself is very even in circulation and the signatures are visible though quite light and there is some light conservation on the reverse, though not note on the holder. The "Printed By B. FRANKLIN" text on the lower reverse is well printed and very clear. Only a total of £4,000 of notes was authorized for this scarce issue. All notes were quickly called in for redemption in specie by October of 1761. As such, it is remarkable that any notes even exist for current day collectors to enjoy.
