Massachusetts Currency
December 7, 1775, 42s, Lot including a Proof Print from the original copper plate of the obverse of Paul Revere's "Sword in Hand," Extremely Fine.
1. 8.75" x 12.25", on modern, high-quality brown paper, unsigned and unnumbered. A dual impression from the counterfeit plate said by Newman to still remain in Montrose, Scotland. Apparently, the plate is holed at the top in the cartouche where the number normally appears. Scarce, unusual, and a great way to obtain a high-grade facsimile of an extremely rare note.
2. Single Proof impression, 9" x 5.75", on the same paper as above.
3. 13 individual Proof impressions on a variety of white stock ranging from thin paper to glossy card stock, all Choice.
4. Letter dated December 1, 1964 from Eric P. Newman to the American Numismatic Society in New York, offering information on the plate from which these notes were printed. In his recent revision of his book on Colonial Currency, Newman indicates that this plate was cut by Henry Dawkins. A fascinating lot for the serious collector.
