Rhode Island Currency
"Whoever Shall Counterfeit The Bills of Credit Hereby Emitted, Shall Suffer The Pains of Death..." 1752, Original Printed Leaf from, "Acts and Laws of His Majesty's Colony of Rhode-Island, Extremely Fine. 11.75" x 7.25," with a 2" tear repaired on the bottom right corner with stamp hinge material. Printed at Newport, RI by James and Ann Franklin, nephew and sister-in-law of Benjamin Franklin. Ann Franklin (1696-1763) was the first woman printer in New England, taking over the business after the death of her husband, the elder James Franklin in 1735. In 1748, she relinquished active control to her son James and formed a partnership with Samuel Hall on the death of her son in 1762. Of particular interest to collectors of Rhode Island Colonial Currency is the paragraph on page 90, which reads, "And be it further Enacted by the Authority aforesaid, That whoever shall counterfeit the Bills of Credit hereby emitted, shall suffer the Pains of Death, and shall also forfeit his Estate, both real and personal, to his Majesty, His Heirs, and Successors, to and fir the use of the Colony." Accompanied by a photocopy of the title page of the original Act. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
