South Carolina Currency
February 8, 1779 South Carolina with "Hope with Anchor" South Carolina. February 8, 1779. Seventy Dollars. "Hope with Anchor" vignette. Extremely Fine. Fr. SC-156. This note is signed by "Coram" as the engraver, within the reverse plate, which shows "Prometheus bound and being attacked by a eagle." The boldly printed face is extremely well centered and the reverse is virtually entirely upon the paper, which is scarce to encounter. There is a single brown, contemporary counting notation on the reverse and a small .75" area of conservation at the center right edge, where a prior hinge was likely removed. Overall, this note has nice eye appeal and has three full signatures. Only about 4,000 notes were authorized to be printed in 1779, with their legal tender status revoked in February 1782.
