Encased Postage Stamps
Rarity-7 One Cent "G. G. Evans" for California Wines EP-14, HB-116, S-84, 1¢, G. G. EVANS, California Wines Agent, Philadelphia, Choice Extremely Fine / About New. Rated as Rarity-7 (11 to 15 known) according to Fred Reed. Evans is one of the more difficult major Merchant types to locate, specially when completing a 34 Merchant Set. This example is excellent in its total originality of quality and overall appearance. The stamp is very well centered and remains a clean, fresh deep original blue in color with just a minor spot of tone on Franklin's lapel. The back case of this Merchant type are made slightly more rounded in their manufacture and the mica generally tends to get pushed inwards, but not in this instance! The mica remains very clean and crystal clear, nearly perfect. The medium chestnut case is impressive in appearance, remaining extremely sharp with excellent detail to the reverse legends. It has virtually no wear, is defect-free and retains nice flashy traces of its original golden mint luster within the legends, adding highlights. This high quality specimen is one of the Finest known of this denomination and is certain to be an important highlight for any quality Encased Postage Stamp collection. Evans is a very historic Merchant type, in that Evans was advertising and promoting the sale of California Wines as an agent in Philadelphia, way back during the Civil War! Apparently even then, California was becoming known for its fine, high quality wines. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
