Encased Postage Stamps
Outstanding One Cent "Gage Brothers & Drake" Rarity EP-15, HB-120, S-88, One Cent, GAGE BROTHERS & DRAKE, TREMONT HOUSE, Chicago, Choice About New. Rated as Rarity-8 (5 to 10 known) according to Fred Reed. A very important rarity for the collector trying to acquire as complete a Encased Postage Stamp collection as possible. Only the third example we have offered in three decades. The stamp is absolutely perfectly centered and retains it's full original bold rich blue appearance. The mica is quite clean and near perfect, with one thin .25" natural surface lamination above the top left moon. The case is a lovely golden-chestnut in color having a little sign of actual circulation and having lots of bright original Silvering on the central reverse. All details of the legends are very clear. This EP number is rarely ever encountered. In fact, we have only offered three examples previously. In 1997 we sold a VF EP-15. In our February 13, 1999 auction, lot 559, About EF, sold at $3,162 and the last EP-15 we offered was in our February 10, 2007 auction, lot 777, also graded About New, which sold for $6,195. A gorgeous example if this significant rarity. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
