Encased Postage Stamps
Outstanding 3¢ "Dougan the Hatter" with "Top Hat" Rarity EP-41, HB-97, S-67, 3¢, DOUGAN THE HATTER, New York, Extremely Fine. Rated as Rarity-7 (11 to 15 known) according to Fred Reed. We have only offered three examples of this EP number, including eleven years ago, in 1999, when a Choice EF+ sold then for $3,450. And, as stated in the Hodder and Bowers reference "The Standard Catalog of Encased Postage Stamps," less than ten three cent specimens are known. This example certainly must rank among the finest. The rich red stamp is well centered, just a bit high and has some scattered specks near center. The mica is very clear and has a faint surface lamination craze near the right moon. The case itself is a lovely golden-chestnut in color with sharp devices, including the unique "Top Hat" vignette design on its reverse. This rare and very popular Dougan the Hatter should see significant bidder participation. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
