Encased Postage Stamps
Rarity-8 Three Cent "White The Hatter" New York EP-59, HB-235, S-179, Three Cents, WHITE THE HATTER, New York, Net Very Fine. Rated as Rarity-8 (5 to 10 known) according to Fred Reed. Fewer than 6 specimens of this denomination have definitely been traced, with only about 20 or so being known for all denominations of this Merchant's entire issue. This example is not perfect. The majority of the central mica has broken and is no longer present. The underlying stamp has not been damaged and only shows some light, even soiling and remains both fully intact and quite decent looking. The case is nice and clean with subdued golden-chestnut color, having a trivial shallow bend at WHITE. The legends are extremely sharp and distinct, with the appearance and quality of Extremely Fine or better. An outstanding opportunity in this wonderful run of choice Encased Postage to acquire a major rarity for a reasonable value. In our EAHA, February 14, 2004, Lot 664, we sold a AU example for $6,615. The prior holder for this specimen indicates that it was previously purchased from Ivy in 1989. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
