Encased Postage Stamps
Exceedingly Rare Ten Cents "John W. Norris" Chicago EP-124, HB-187, S-139, Ten Cents, JOHN W. NORRIS, Chicago, IL, Very Fine. Rated as Rarity-8+ (about 5 known) according to Fred Reed. An important "Key" and major Merchant type, specially when one tries to complete a 34 piece Merchant set. The 10¢ is considered one of only two denominations which are even considered to be "collectable." As such, this piece is certainly extremely important. The case is remarkably clean, smooth and sharp, being a natural medium chestnut in color with Extremely Fine details. The mica is mostly missing, 90% being broken away with about 10% held by the outer frame. The green George Washington stamp is deep green with some light soiling from exposure. A truly important Encased Postage Stamp rarity that is needed by virtually every collector. We sold: Early American Numismatics Auction, April 22, 2000, Lot 291 selling for $4,025. and the last was in our EAHA, Dr. Gratz Collection Auction, August 27, 2005, as Lot 870, in EF, selling at $5,310. There was only one example of an EP-124 in the Stack's John J. Ford, Jr. Auction, June 2004, graded Choice Extremely Fine, which sold for $4,600. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
