Encased Postage Stamps
Twelve Cents "Hunt & Nash, Irving House" Ribbed Frame One of Only Three Known

EP-151, HB-156, S-110a, Twelve Cents, HUNT & NASH, IRVING HOUSE, New York, Ribbed Frame, Extremely Fine.
Rated as Rarity-9 (2 to 4 known) according to Fred Reed. Currently accepted as One of only Three Known to exist and the second finest in quality known. The celebrated Stack's John J. Ford, Jr. Sale included Lot 528 which was graded About New. This present example is a close second in quality. The third finest was sold in the EAHA Auction, December 2, 1995, Lot 860, graded EF, which sold for $4,950. The deep black 12¢ George Washington stamp is clean and fresh, with full original quality. The mica is crystal clear and not broken. The case is defect-free, and a light natural golden-chestnut in color showing very light even wear. There is no catalog price value listed for this extreme rarity, either in the Standard Catalogue, or in Fred Reed's reference. Every detail of the obverse frame's "ribbing" is sharp and well defined, as are the reverse legends. This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire one of the most elusive rarities of the entire Encased Postage Stamp field. One of Only Three Known.
