Encased Postage Stamps
One of Two Known Thirty Cents "J. Gault" With Ribbed Frame and Tied As The Finest Known

EP-179, HB-140, S-100a, Thirty Cents, J. GAULT, with Ribbed Frame, Extremely Fine.
One of Two Known, according to Fred Reed, who's research includes a census of auction results and survey including appearances over 104 years. The price value for this number is represented with Dashes, being unpriced in any grade in his major reference work, "Civil War Encased Stamps." The only other known specimen was sold in the Stack's, John J. Ford, Jr. Collection of 2004, also including the notation of "two known" in that catalog. Both This great rarity has is quite equal in overall quality to the Ford example. Thus it is actually and remarkably, Tied as the Finest Known!

The orange Thirty Cents Benjamin Franklin portrait stamp remains quite nice in color, with some faint tone to the white portions. The mica is clear, having a fine thin crack from the lower left rim edge at 7:00 to Franklin's right shoulder. The case is solid, completely solid and has no major detractions and decent overall eye appeal. It is fully original and a natural chestnut in color with sharp detail to the rare obverse "ribbing." This is a significant, major Encased Postage Stamp rarity. As compared to virtually any other major field of collecting, specially within numismatics, the market valuation of this piece seems ridiculous and silly low. One of Two Known and Tied for Finest Known. Ex: Frederick R. Mayer Collection.
