Civil War Era Currency
Post Civil War Kansas Scrip Topeka, KS, Union Military Scrip, $20, June 1, 1867, Very Fine. Haxby KS-Not Listed. Whitfield-423. A distinctive and interesting issue printed by the Continental Bank Note Co. after the war. Liberty with flag at bottom center. Upper left, the Kansas Arms. These were paid out for settlement of claims growing out of the Price raid in 1864. The Confederated force of General Sterling Price was the only one of the major armies to cross the Kansas border. In September 1864, General Price conducted the expedition known as "Price's Raid" through Arkansas and Missouri. He entered Kansas through Linn County in an apparent effort to reach Fort Scott, met the Unionists at Mine Creek and again at the crossing of the Osage. Here he was turned back into Missouri, after having caused damage to the extent of one-half million dollars, later to be paid by the Government. Some moderate folds, but fairly bright on the face. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
