1795, Jean Jacques Barthelemy Medal. By Duvivier. Silvered Bronze. Extremely Fine. 41 mm. There is a small 1/4" rough spot on the lower left obverse at 8:00 near the rim and has light overall wear. Rare. Jean Jacques Barthelemy, Born in Cassis (Provence), January 20, 1716. Tonsured, he was not a priest; orientalist, polyglot, scholar, numismatist, he was assistant of Gros de Boze, keeps with the cabinet Medals, in 1745, and succeeded to him in 1753; it had been received with the Academy of the Inscriptions in 1747. It writted the Voyage of the Anacharsis young Greece, four volumes, in 1788; this work was worth the honor to him to receive at his place the members of the French Academy who asked him to be presented in company ; it made the visits of use then, and was elected on March 5, 1789, at the 73 years age, to replace Nicolas Beauzée, and was on accepted by the marquis Boufflers August 25, 1789. He was the last academician elected by the old Academy. He had formerly attended the living room of Mrs. of Deffand, and was member Academies of London, Madrid, Cortone, Pezaro. He was stopped during Terror and undergoes sixteen hours of detention in Madelonnettes; its age and its fame were its widening to him; it was pensioned by Convention in 1794 (hostile with the ideas of the Revolution).
